In time for Lent, the Hermitage of the Holy Cross presents a brand new, beautiful, English language service book for the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. For many years, there has not been available to ROCOR priests and deacons, a decent and easy-to-use English language service book for the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. After over 12 years of editing and improving on existing texts, the fathers at the Hermitage have finally compiled an instructive and workable service book which uses common ROCOR prayers and petitions and which has proven to be an indispensable aid to serving the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
The fathers at the Hermitage paid special attention to the formatting in this book, so that it is very "user-friendly." That is, we emphasized the unique parts of the service so that the clergy can more easily navigate the complicated parts of the service. This new book is also very beautiful. The artwork used throughout the book is inspired by ancient illuminated texts which have been faithfully rendered and recreated, making this service book a joy to behold. It is full color and nearly 80 pages long. The font used in the book is large and easy to read. The book is 5.5 in. x 8.5 in. and is spiral bound. This type of binding makes it easier to use because the book lays flat on the priest's analogies. The Hermitage brotherhood is very happy that God has allowed the printing of this much-needed book, which is the first liturgical service book for clergy printed by the Hermitage.

“For He hath looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden; for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.”
—(Luke 1:48)
A right understanding of Mary, the Mother of God is essential for a right understanding of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. When her image is distorted, the image of her Son also becomes distorted.
This concise little book is a classic exposition of how the Orthodox Christian Church has venerated the Mother of God throughout the ages, and on the chief errors that have sought to change or undermine this veneration: both ancient heresies and the later deviations of Western Christendom. It clearly tells why the Virgin Mary should truly be called the Mother of God and should be honored by all generations, and why at the same time She cannot be said to have been unable to sin, or considered a Co-Redemptress along with Jesus Christ, the only Savior of the world.
Written by a miracle-worker of modern times who was in close spiritual contact with the Mother of God - St. John (Maximovitch), Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco (1896-1966) - this work was translated by an American convert to the Orthodox Faith who was a beloved disciple of St. John: Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose) of Platina (1934-1982).

by L. Joseph Letendre
In this companion volume to the popular When You Pray, L. Joseph Letendre explores the underpinnings of the Church's practice of fasting and of ascetic discipline in general. Rather than being preoccupied with the details of food regulations, he helps the reader understand the purpose of fasting and how to enter into it more willingly and fully.
About the Author: L. Joseph Letendre is the author of When You Pray from Ancient Faith Publishing as well as the popular guide, Preparing for Confession. His writing has also appeared in Touchstone, The Reformation and Revival Journal, and St. Vladimir’s Theological Quarterly. He recorded the audiobook of St. Nicholai Velimirovic’s Prayers by the Lake for AFP. He holds degrees in psychology, philosophy, and education, as well as an MDiv from St. Vladimir’s Seminary. He is a parishioner at All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Chicago, IL.
Praise for When You Fast
"This excellent 'how-to' on how and why to fast is just what I need, and I've recommended it to family and friends (who need it less than I do). The book is a valuable distillation of the Orthodox mind about fasting, all of it prayerful and profound despite its brevity. No fat whatsoever! This should be on the reading table of every Orthodox Christian." -Deacon Nicholas Dujmovic, Orthodox Church in America, and professor at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
"When You Fast is a vibrant summons to follow one of the most basic teachings of the Gospels, as well as an encouraging and practical guide for doing so. Because almost everything we hear and see around us seems to promote the world, the flesh and the devil, Christian self-discipline is needed more than ever. Read this book and put it into practice. You and those around you will benefit." -James M. Kushiner, Executive Editor, Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity
"Joseph Letendre’s When You Fast is a guidebook for experienced Orthodox Christians, those new to the Faith, or those questioning why we Orthodox fast. A must read before each fast, it’s a perfect reminder that fasting is not only an obedience, but a grace-filled privilege." - Cynthia Damaskos, Holistic Christian Life/Filled With Less
